The Plaid Plains Reopen

Introducing our new website! Is it flashy? No. Is it functional? Yes. Is it mobile friendly? Definitely.

Building this website has been a journey because after looking through hundreds of themes, we couldn’t find anything with a layout that fit what we needed from a website. After unsuccessfully attempting to customize things in the back end of a free theme, Naomi decided that it might be better to just build it from scratch. She had no idea what she was getting herself into.

She found tutorials online that taught how to create a Word Press theme and she began building one. If you have ever built a website on a service like Weebly, Wix, or even using a Word Press theme let me tell you, you have no idea how good you have it. Watching Naomi mess around with the coding just to center a title on the page or change the font made me realize how much work even the simplest of tasks is. First she had to locate it in the code, then she had to figure out what to write into the code to make it function properly.

Every once in a while we would Skype and I would help with deciding the aesthetics of the website. Finally, when we were getting close to being done with it I showed it to a programmer and he mentioned that we needed to make sure it was mobile friendly. It was decidedly not mobile friendly. Not at all. So, with the February 1 release date looming, Naomi decided there was no time to learn how to make it mobile friendly. Back to the free Word Press themes!

This time, however, Naomi knew how to build a website, so changing around the back end of the theme was far simpler. As a result, we have a mobile friendly website that is customized to us. For reference, here is what the theme originally looked like.

So here it is. Our website. It’s not particularly flashy, but it gets the job done, is easily navigable, and allows us to communicate with our Plaid Posse. That’s you. We know you’ve always secretly dreamed about being part of a posse, and here we are making your dreams come true. We’re like the best thing since the Make a Wish Foundation.
